Introduction…
Well…the majority of y’all voted for me to post a snippet from “The Vault”…which is rly just old random short snippets I wrote on a whim…or due to a prompt or school assignment…this one is based on a picture prompt a friend of mine shared…it’s not great…I wrote it a while back…and I didn’t put a lot of thought into it…it was just a quick little snippet I wrote for fun…“Blue Sand” is what I call it…but it doesn’t truly have a title…most of my vault stories don’t…anyway…without further ado…the snippet:
Blue Sand Snippet…
“Wow!” Cozette gasped looking down at the new planet through the window of our ship “It’s covered in water!”
“Not water,” I corrected placing my hand on her shoulder “Sand.”
“Blue sand?” she asked skeptically
“Yep,” I replied. It was beautiful the dunes looked like ripples but there was little water on the planet. Only the blue sand.
I wake up with a start and look up to see Jeran, my brother, who had knocked over some boxes in my room. “JERAN!” I shout angry that he interrupted my sleep “GET OUT!”
His eyes widen “Uh, okay, but mom said that you need to get your behind out of bed.” Then he turns around and walks out of my room.
I sigh and look up at my bedroom ceiling. Life has been so hard recently. But after a few moments of staring at nothing I get out of bed. I get dressed for the day and go to find my mother. She’s fixing the water system. “Morning Mom!” I greet her and she glances at me, smiles, then turns to finish tightening a screw. When she’s done she turns to me, “Good morning starlight,” she smiles brightly “Sleep well?” I just shrug.
“Well,” she says “get yourself some breakfast then report to your dad for your daily tasks”
“Yes, ma’am” I smile and give a mock salute. She just winks and gets back to work. Then I leave for the little kitchen area. I eat my food and then go to find my father. Looking for him I run into my brother “Hey, Jer” I smile
“Hey, grumpy pants!” he replies but with a smile as big as the galaxy itself
“Whatcha doin’?”
“Helping mom out with the water system.”
“Is it really that messed up?”
“Yeah, that gas planet we passed through somehow messed with it.”
“So if the damage was done on the outside why are you working on the inside?”
“You know how water is with the pressure and whatnot. A kink in a pipe from the outside and water bursting on the inside.”
“I see. You’re probably going to have to do a spacewalk, huh?”
“Not me!” he shakes his head and I know my task for the day
“Aw, great!” I exclaim before he can break the news
“You’re the best at it, sis. You can do it easily!”
“Well, I’m going to go report to Dad.” I walk away but not soon enough to escape Jeran’s very loud, off-key, out of tune, singing. He has a terrible singing voice! But, he insists it helps him work. I find my dad in the bathroom working on some pipes. Is everyone working on the water system today?
“You’re on the water system too?” I ask him
“Nope!” he replies looking up “I’m working on the sewage pipes”
“Ew,” I mutter my nose crinkling “Jer said I’d be doing the spacewalk.” no need to dance around what I know is coming
“Only if you’re comfortable with it,” he says softly “You are the best choice”
“I can,” I say nodding not that I want to.
I went to my room to suit up but I ended up sitting on my bed staring out into space.
“Look Sor,” Cozette pointed at the sky “Rainbows!”
I was holding her small gloved hand and looking up. “Those aren’t rainbows Cozzie,” I told her “They’re just colorful clouds,”
“Blue sand and rainbow clouds!” she exclaimed “This place is beautiful!”
“Yes, it is,” I chuckled “If it were able to support life we could live here.”
“Oh, I wish we could!” she said almost whispering
“So do I. Well, let’s get back to the ship!” I picked her up and began to walk to our ship not too far in the distance.
A knock on my door. “Are you ready, starlight?” my mother asks through the door
“Almost!” I call jumping up grabbing my gear and zipping myself into it.
I step out of my room and my mom checks all my gear. Then we make our way to the airlock.
“It’s just a couple of small kinks,” my mom says “You won’t have to do too much,”
“Alright,” I say and I step into the airlock. I haven’t done this since the mistake. I haven’t done this since Gaineamh-Gorm. I haven’t done this since we lost Cozette.
Then the airlock opens. I climb out tethered to the ship. I stare out into the darkness of space. It’s like I can see her.
“I want to stay, Sor!” Cozette whined
“We can’t, Cozzie,” I said softly “Go to sleep. We’ll find an even prettier planet soon.” I tucked her in bed and kissed her forehead. I went to sleep myself but was awoken by the airlock alarm. I put on my gear quickly and followed her out. Her helmet was cracked. She was floating off into space. “COZETTE!” I yelled into the comlink
“Sor,” she said weakly “Sorella, I’m sorry.”
I reach her and drag her back into the ship.
“SORELLA!” my father yells through the comlink “WHAT ARE YOU DOING!”
“Oh, sorry,” I say softly sniffling
“You need to stay focused,” he tells me, kind but firm.
“Yeah, I know,” I tell him, I find the crushed panel and the pipes. I fix them. I make my way back.
“You okay, sis?” Jeran asks me once I’m inside and changed
“Yeah,” I say “I just need some rest.”
“Okay, well, good job today!” he smiles slightly “Oh, and Mom said we’re making a trip to Gaineamh-Gorm.”
“Oh,” I say and he leaves
I held her small body. Ten years wasn’t long enough for a life. My little sister. My little Cozzie. I sat on the floor of the ship crying. We buried her on her favorite planet. Gaineamh-Gorm. Named for its blue sand. We left her there on the uninhabitable beautiful planet.
We visit her grave. Just to see her. And I take a walk looking out on the saddest most beautiful planet I have ever seen.
Conclusion…
And that’s it…I hope y’all enjoyed…PLEASE leave any thoughts you may have in the comments…Have a wonderful weekend…
